The actual Zenec E>GO generation is being launched with an innovative hard- and software platform and many additional features. For the first time, among the seven new permanently installed in-car navigation systems tailor-made for various car models, there is now also a vehicle-specific naviceiver for the AUDI A4.

The ZE-NC3141D offers multimedia entertainment and navigation comfort at the highest level. The great range of functions and the optimal integration in the AUDI A4 make these E>GO permanently installed navigation systems the ideal aftermarket device to replace

out-dated car radios and navigation systems. Equipped with the very latest features and technologies, the ZE-NC3141D is also a top-quality alternative to high-price factory-fitted navigation systems, which are often developed at the same time as the car model.

Perfect integration in the AUDI A4

Radically simpler integration in the specific target vehicle is what distinguishes the E>GO series: instead of compromises, a specifically designed, perfect system solution. The ZE-NC3141D is visually and technically tailored to the AUDI A4 (B7), and not only because of its construction and the red button illumination. Like every E>GO model, it is no problem at all to integrate it in the radio slot of the target vehicle – no need for additional bezels or adapters. The ZE-NC3141D is linked to the factory installed steering wheel remote controls via the vehicle-specific CAN bus. That’s it – all A/V sources (radio, CD/DVD, MP3, USB) and the hands-free function can be controlled as usual via the steering wheel remote control. The driver information system (FIS) is linked to the E>GO via the CAN bus interface. The display of radio and audio information is then supported.

High performance navigation system

The ZE-NC3141D navigation section offers a fistful of functions. High resolution maps of 43 European countries with Premium POIs, integrated TMC/TMC Pro receiver, Text-to-Speech announcement of street names and the many nav functions make this E>GO the perfect navigator. Naturally, thanks to the Latest Map Guarantee, all your nav data is always kept updated.

The detailed 3D HD rendering of terrain, points of interest and buildings shows the environment as it really is – three dimensional – and helps orientation, especially in big cities. Thanks to realistic displays of freeway interchanges and exits, lane changing and leaving the freeway become even simpler.

For the new E>GO generation, the function package has been substantially expanded. The newly implemented Quick menu gives lightning-fast access to all functions – even making the search for points of interest very much simpler. Shorter and more economic routes can be planned using the Smart or Eco modes of route calculation. In addition, traffic information and advisories are displayed when crossing EU borders, and you receive visual and acoustic speed warnings if the permitted speed limit is exceeded.

With the new E>GO you can import Outlook data using Toolbox and use it for navigation. Updates and additional POIs can easily be downloaded from the Naviextras online portal www.zenec.naviextras.com and installed via USB.

In the centre − the user

Ease of operation also achieves a new level with Zenec’s new E>GO generation. The clearly structured menus of the newly designed GUIs are self-explanatory and intuitive to use. Large control fields and logically structured navigation ensure that the ZE-NC3141D can also be controlled in safety when you are driving. The touch slide function lets you surf through the menus with ease. The features appearing on the navigation main menu can be placed in different positions by dragging. Another very user-friendly feature is the export and import of user settings function: these can be saved on a USB stick and reloaded later.

Total multimedia

For the multimedia part, the new E>GO is perfectly equipped as usual. A built-in CD/DVD drive, a USB port, a connection for an iPod/iPhone as well as an SD/SDHC card reader are provided to playback the latest music and video formats. The ample number of A/V connections – for example, the ZE-NC3141D also has a 4.1 preamp output – enables the connection of further components. External monitors, DVB-T or DAB+ tuner or a rear-view camera can be connected directly to the E>GO and controlled via the fast reaction, high-resolution digital 15.7 cm/6.2” wide VGA touchscreen display.

Hassle-free hands-free BT calling

The Bluetooth suite of the ZE-NC3141D comes from Parrot, leading supplier of hands-free systems worldwide and guarantor for comfortable call handling. With the new search function (up to 15 letters), it is now even simpler to find an entry in large phone books. The Quick-Dial menu allows direct access to five favorite contacts that are easy to edit.

But Parrot also stands for excellent speech quality – either using the integrated microphone or the multi-directional, freely positionable, external microphone supplied. Thanks to the innovative audio DSP, unwanted ambient sounds can be filtered out more efficiently and voices understood more easily.

Congratulations! With the launch of its very latest version, the Audi A4 turns 40! This means a full four decades of success, first for the Audi 80, then for the A4 – and ABT has been part of this success from the very beginning. “The A4 is an important car for us, too. It always re-defines the premium standard for medium-sized cars,” says Hans-Jürgen Abt. The renowned Bavarian tuning company’s CEO is proud to be able to present the new ABT AS4 on the occasion of the series model’s fortieth anniversary: “Our AS4 is definitely state-of-the-art. It combines sportiness and assertiveness,” Hans-Jürgen Abt explains. The AS4 is a most dependable car in every situation. But it also means sheer pleasure!

In terms of better performance, ABT Sportsline always provides balanced packages that are fully geared to the respective car and the requirements of the owner. An ABT is always a dynamic vehicle, and for its whole life at that! And what the engineers came up with for the new AS4 has been mercilessly endurance-tested, of course. The figures read as follows. ABT POWER lends the top model 435 hp (320 kW), up from the original V6 petrol engine’s 333 hp (245 kW): this fast ABT only needs 4.8 seconds to go to 100 km/h from a standstill and is very torquey indeed, with a top speed of 282 km/h. And the 3.0 TDI is a real fierce car: In its ABT POWER version, the turbo diesel engine shows 282 hp or 207 kW (serial version: 245 hp/180 kW). Its torque is 560 Nm, up from 500 and certainly enough for every situation. And the “little” four-cylinder version, the 2.0 TFSI, has also undergone an ABT POWER treatment. Up from 211 hp (155 kW), the petrol engine now shows 275 hp (202 kW). Whatever engine you may want to buy, you will always get a lot of added sportiness and agility.

And of course you will always be able to tell a true ABT from a less powerful car. That was so 40 years ago and it also applies to the new AS4. ABT has developed body parts that underscore the car’s character and make it self-confident and dynamic but without seeming arrogant, as it were. The front air dam is fully in line with the striking lights of the AS4, almost pressing the car down onto the road. This sporty approach is continued by the ABT Sportsline designers in the side sills and wing inserts. Aerofoils, rear apron inserts and the two two-pipe exhaust systems round off this very, very sporty – and stylish – car’s design. And last but not least, there are the ABT alloy wheels: Be it CR Silverlight or DR – they are all perfect for the new ABT AS4. Needless to say, they are also available in combination with high-speed tyres. After all, the AS4’s success story is to be continued – on blacktop!

What is it that turns the average mild-mannered driver into Michael Schumacher as he revs his engine, waiting for the traffic lights to change?

Since the dawn of time, man has craved the thrill of the adrenaline rush that rapid acceleration can trigger. This is true of all drivers, to a greater or lesser degree, regardless of age or gender - there are traces of Schumacher in all of us!

This desire for excitement is very real. It goes beyond the psychological. It is hormonal.

The adrenaline rush

When we feel nervous or excited, adrenaline is secreted by the adrenal glands and enters the blood stream. As we wait for the traffic lights to change, tension builds. Our air passages dilate, our heart rate increases and we breathe more heavily, pumping more blood into our muscles. This increases sensitivity throughout the entire body and creates a feeling of heightened awareness. The pupils dilate and our vision becomes clearer. If the pressure is really on, we may even break out into a sweat. The digestive system stops functioning altogether, but the liver increases its metabolic rate giving us an immediate energy boost. We suddenly feel able to respond quickly and efficiently to any challenge. In extreme cases, we really do develop super-human strength. It is as though the body has shifted into a higher gear as the brain finally releases endorphins, giving us that exhilarating thrill as the car pulls quickly away when the lights eventually turn green. Driving at its very best.

It seems that man’s desire to achieve 0-60 in record time is more than just aggression, vanity or a mid-life crisis. It is driven by a physical need for excitement. A need to feel alive. Society owes everything to those seeking the most extreme, nerve-tingling experiences. The geographical explorers of yesteryear, are the ones pushing the boundaries of technology today. Remember that, the next time you feel guilty about the pleasure derived from pulling away quickly from the traffic lights.

TTS PERFORMANCE, SILVERSTONE
Richard Albans, CEO of TTS Performance Parts Ltd in Silverstone, understands the “traffic light syndrome” better than most. Starting out in 1982, the company quickly built an international reputation for building and tuning race engines. Richard himself holds a number of impressive land speed records and still participates regularly in car and bike drag racing. Today the company is focused on supercharger conversions both for motorcycles and road cars, working closely with the high end supercharger manufacturer, Rotrex, of Denmark.

“Superchargers have been around for some time”, explains Albans. “The first one was produced by Scottish engineer, Sir Dugald Clerk back as early as 1878!” Gottlieb Daimler and Louis Renault in turn patented later versions and Mercedes went on to launch the first series production cars with superchargers at the Berlin Automobile Exhibition in September 1921, the 2.6 litre 10/40 and the 1.6 litre 6/25 models known as Kompressors. The rest, as they say, is history.

SUPERCHARGER TECHNOLOGY
Today there are two fundamentally different types of superchargers being produced. They differ in the method used to compress the air flowing through them. The Mercedes “roots” type of supercharger uses a system known as “positive displacement” whereby the volume of air displaced is fixed for each revolution of the engine. The “centrifugal” type favoured by TTS is more dynamic in that the air pressure increases with speed and is therefore more efficient at high boost levels.

A well designed and professionally fitted supercharger should be capable of meeting the individual driver’s requirements for engine performance, driveability and reliability. Fitting a supercharger is one of the most effective ways of improving the performance of an internal combustion engine without having to modify the engine itself. In a centrifugal system, the supercharger powers an impeller at high speed, drawing air into the centre at low pressure. The impeller vanes slow down the air flow, increasing the pressure. By compressing the air before it enters the cylinders, more air and fuel can be burned at the combustion stage, increasing torque by around 70% and horsepower by as much as 100%.

ROTREX SUPERCHARGERS
Because Rotrex superchargers are powered mechanically by means of a belt driven directly by the crankshaft, there is no delay in throttle response time from the pedal as there is with a turbocharger. The patented traction drive technology, transmitting power through the friction forces between the rotating parts, is key to the Rotrex compact design, high efficiency, low noise and outstanding reliability. This friction is optimised by the specially developed traction fluid which has increasing viscosity as the surface pressure increases, enhancing drive performance whilst cooling and protecting the system.

Rotrex centrifugal systems can usually be bolted to the top or side of an engine, making them easy to install and cheap to maintain. Richard Albans selected Rotrex as the supplier of his superchargers believing that they have a competitive edge over any other forced induction system. “Simple in their design and built to last from high quality, non-exotic materials, Rotrex superchargers are more readily customised and integrated with our customers’ engines to produce the best possible performance at minimal cost. The results at the traffic lights speak for themselves!”

TTS has recently introduced a conversion of the Rotrex supercharger for the Audi B8 S5 and B7 RS4 4.2 FSI V8 engine’s. Designed and manufactured at the TTS development centre in Silverstone, the new conversion uses the latest Rotrex C38-91 centrifugal supercharger that spins at 90,000 rpm and is capable of flowing 0.7 kg of air per second (over 1200 cfm). Although the system flows a large volume of air, it does so very efficiently, keeping the compressed charge temperature below 45ºC, even when accelerating hard. The plenum chamber and charge cooler housing are CNC machined from aircraft grade aluminium, combining maximum strength with minimum weight.

This Audi supercharger conversion has the largest possible charge cooler for the space available, ensuring that the air is cool, the charge is dense and the power is great. In addition to the cooling system and the 180 litres/minute OEM quality Bosch water pump, the system uses 6mm Phonetic gaskets to reduce any heat transfer from the engine to the plenum chamber. The result: maximum power for the longest period of time.

Audi felt that a 5 rib belt would be capable of driving the alternator and TTS realised that running a supercharger with the same size of belt would lead to problems. The company has therefore designed a supercharger drive train using an 8 rib heavy duty belt to give the maximum wrap around the supercharger and crank pulleys and provide greater resistance to slip. This design, together with the high quality SKF silicon grease bearings in all the additional pulleys and the Zylan coated finish, gives the system good corrosion resistance and durability. Confident that the conversion is robust, TTS provides 2 years warranty with the Audi supercharger.

The superior boost performance at low engine speeds makes this the ideal supercharger for drivers of road cars looking for more bottom end torque. The silent traction drive maintains an OEM feel to everyday motoring. What’s more, the Audi supercharger ensures full power in the all-important traffic lights test.

Albans believes that the combination of Rotrex technology with the experience and understanding of his team in Silverstone is a winning one. “As one of life’s true adrenaline junkies, I know exactly what my customers are looking for when waiting for the lights to turn green. There is nothing more satisfying than feeling that the car beneath you is fully synchronised with you and your aspirations for that brief but intense thrill of rapid acceleration.” Happy to learn that his quest for speed qualifies him as a pioneer in the modern world rather than simply a would-be boy racer, he is looking forward to enabling Audi drivers in the UK and beyond to get the most from their engines and leave every set of traffic lights fully charged with endorphins – with just a cursory glance at the surprised driver of the brand new R8 alongside as you leave him standing.

The GruppeM RAMair intake system was recently tested on a 2008 Audi RS4 to verify performance gains. The results are summarised as follows:

STOCK VS. GRUPPEM INTAKE DYNO COMPARISON:

Stock intake whp: 341.9 @ 7500 rpm GruppeM intake whp: 361.1 @ 7500 rpm
Stock intake trq: 296.7 lb-ft @ 3700 rpm GruppeM intake trq: 306.2 lb-ft @ 3700 rpm

Peak Gains: 21.5 whp @ 8300 rpm, 15.1 lb-ft @ 6700 rpm*
*Average gain of 15.3 whp and 12.4 lb-ft of torque from 4500-8500 rpm
Stock intake: 8.66-sec GruppeM intake: 8.38-sec*

60-120MPH TEST:
Stock intake: 10.9-sec GruppeM intake: 10.6-sec

The GruppeM arrangement showed a consistent improvement by 3F. When stationary or cruising at low speeds, the carbon fiber GruppeM air box kept air intake temperatures lower over the OEM plastic air intake, with less heat-soak when compared to the stock arrangement.

Following our earlier announcement of the PES Superchager kit for various Audi models, now it’s time to show you the new Stage III Supercharger System for B7 Audi RS 4 from APR.

Producing over 570hp and 510 ft-lbs of torque, APR’s RS4 Stage III propels one of Audi’s most prestigious performance vehicles to new levels of acceleration and performance.

APR claim that their design focussed on fitment, operation and consideration of the long term effects of the power increase and the overall reliability of the vehicle. The result is increased wide open throttle acceleration, and improved daily driving with increased torque and horsepower available at low range of rpm band. Less downshifting for passing and greater rates of acceleration at all points result in a driving characteristic of pure enjoyment in all situations.
